In all her work, Gwladys Gambie leaves an important place for plants, whether in creating Manman Chadwon [the sea urchin goddess], reinterpreting bodies associated with coral, or in her illustration work where plants often create the setting for the action.

“I reinterpret the interactions between bodies and plants through my plastic work.”

Lascivious bodily forms, stretched out in almost gentle positions, at odds with the brutality of the sea spines that inhabit them...

Gwladys Gambie was born in 1988 in Fort-de-France, Martinique. After obtaining her DNSEP art in 2014, she carried out artist residencies in the Caribbean, Aruba, Guadeloupe, Trinidad & Tobago, Cuba, as well as exhibitions in the USA, Guyana, France, Brazil.

The black female condition is one of her main issues, which she explores through drawing, sculpture and embroidery. Surrounded by verdant nature, she enriches her imagination and integrates a dreamlike dimension into her graphic work. Bodies and marine flora intermingle, providing an insight into a Caribbean society still imprisoned in its colonial shackles.

Creole, a highly imaginative language charged with symbolism, enables her to create a specific iconography in her work around a decolonial representation of the black female body.

2018
