Johanna Grégoire was born and raised in the Paris region. As her mother also grew up in mainland France, it was her grandmother Jenny who reconnected her to her roots. Johanna spent all her summers with her in Martinique, discovering the island, its habits and the little things of everyday life. When she arrived in La Réunion in 2016, she felt a sense of familiarity, a connection with the French West Indies. For her, those linked histories have everything to do with sugar cane. So she has been working with this material since...

“I'm interested in the impact of cane culture in our ultramarine cultural histories: from Reunion Island, where I live, to the West Indies where my roots are. For me, it's a question of considering this herb as making “bedrock” in many ways in Creole societies.”
